Richard Mille RM 07-01 TZP Brown Ceramic AO RG-TZP-Z

Richard Mille doesn't just make men's luxury watches—in fact, he's one of just a few high-end horologists to create ladies' timepieces that really push those watch-nerd buttons. You see, a girl with a yen for a fine watch can go to most of the big brands. But she'll usually end up with a smaller version of a man's standard luxury watch: or a piece that's all jewellery and no mechanical action.
The Richard Mille RM 07-01 TZP Brown Ceramic , on the other hand, is built from the ground up to tickle the watch-geek bone as well as the sense of beauty. Turn the piece over and look through the sapphire caseback, and you see the CRMA2 movement in all its skeletonised beauty:
The beautiful red-gold rotor is the centrepiece of this automatic calibre with central hours and minutes. In the RM 07-01 AO RG-TZP-Z, as in other Richard Mille luxury watches, it's adjustable. The wearer can alter the geometry of the rotor by setting tiny screws, thereby changing its weight and movement to optimise winding according to lifestyle. In other words: if you're really active (like Cristie Kerr, one of Richard Mille's extended celebrity family, who wears the RM 07-01 while winning LPGA Tour matches), you can alter the rotor to swing less. But if you're an armchair horologist, you can change it so it swings more.
The case of the RM07-01 AO RG-TZP-Z is pretty small for a Richard Mille: just 31 mm. It's made of a chocolate-brown TZP-Z ceramic, super-hard and super-shiny and offset with delicate gold framing. Behind the elliptical dial with its gemstone insets, the CRMA2 calibre peers out: not quite as brashly as the full skeletonisation of a gents' Richard Mille, but showing plenty of mechanical flesh nonetheless. For a woman who's been looking for that elusive combination of visible watch-geekery and effortless sheen, it's like a gift from the watchmaking gods.
The caseband is in satinated red gold, with brightly-polished gold pillars for the revealed spline screws that hold the front bezel in place. The tripartite case is water resistant to 50 metres. As befits a sports watch (and in keeping with Richard Mille's design codes) the bracelet is rubber: chocolate brown, to match the bezel. Hour markers are lumed indices, and the red-gold hands have lumed points.
The RM07 was the first Richard Mille luxury watch for ladies , and it's still the brand's best effort to combine feminine sophistication with watch-nerd credentials. Other women's models in the lineup either veer into masculinity, or become too much like novelty jewellery items: all diamond-studded sculptures and enamelled flowers. The Richard Mille RM 07-01 TZP Brown Ceramic walks a middle line, revelling in the stealth luxury of its movement, barely visible at the front but naked when the watch is viewed through the exhibition window. And enjoying, too, the trappings of not-so-stealthy luxury in that gemstone-studded, slickly-dimensioned face.
This is a luxury watch for everywhere, from the gym to the restaurant to the golf links. And it isn't designed as an afterthought for a woman who might like a genuine timepiece. It's built for lovers of haute horlogerie who want neither filthy great sports chronos taking up half their wrist space, or fiddly bits of expensive jewellery that struggle to tell the time.
